Background to the project
Egdon Resources is an independent onshore-focused oil and gas exploration and production business that is developing opportunities for energy storage, hydrogen and renewable generation.
Following intermittent faults with the company’s 75 kW Hitachi onsite drive unit for the main oil well pump, it requested the support of Interpanel to replace the existing control panel with a new Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). The scope of work included onsite installation and full integration with the site’s safety systems.
A bespoke solution
With no drawings of the existing drive control panel, Interpanel coordinated a site engineer to visit and assess the components and wiring. Using our E-plan design software, new drawings were prepared and issued along with a Functional Design Specification (FDS) to define and agree on the project requirements.
Once the FDS was approved, Interpanel ordered long-lead items to our manufacturing facility for the construction of the new drive panel. Upon completion, the drive panel underwent in-house testing procedures and rigorous quality checks to ensure compliance with design and safety standards.
Following successful testing, our site engineers replaced the existing drive panel onsite and commissioned the system, verifying that all normal operation and safety features were fully functional.
New and improved
The replacement of the 75 kW Hitachi drive with a new Allen-Bradley 75 kW VFD successfully resolved the intermittent faults that Egdon had previously experienced, ensuring reliable operation of its main oil well pump.
The new drive also offers networked communication capabilities, allowing integration with other onsite systems. This functionality was not possible with the previous drive, so it has significantly enhanced monitoring, control, and operational efficiency.
By fully integrating the drive with the site safety systems, compliance with operational and safety standards has been maintained, reducing the risk of downtime or safety incidents.
In addition, the updated functional and wiring drawings developed by Interpanel provide a clear reference for future maintenance, troubleshooting, or upgrades, including at other site locations.
